With matches in the Premier League being postponed due to rising cases of Covid-19 there’s obvious concern further down the football pyramid.

In the North West Counties Division One North, Golcar United boss Ash Connor is keeping a watching brief and said: “Obviously it is worrying that games are being called off but no one wants the game to stop again.

“Our league wanted to get at least half a season played up to November where everyone has played each other once. They have successfully organised that and so if the season did stop at least they have got a set of results to go off.

“We’ll just keep concentrating on ourselves and see what decisions are made and follow them.”

Golcar currently sit second in the division but level on points, 48, with top club Bury AFC. Bury do have a better goal difference and a game in hand. Holker Old Boys are in third place just two points behind the top two.

Going into this weekend Bury AFC face Campion away, whilst Holker visit Garstang and Golcar take on Cleator Moor Celtic in Cumbria.

The race for the title could take another twist this weekend but Connor knows they’ll have to defeat an increasingly confident Cleator Moor side.

On their opponents on Saturday (3.00) Connor said: “I said earlier this season that I thought they were in a false position and I knew they would improve. They are too good a team not to.

“Hopefully we have a good number of healthy players to pick from for what will be another tough test.”

Last weekend Golcar defeated Atherton 2-0 in what was a bounce back victory from the disappointing loss to bottom club St Helens. Buddy Cox grabbed both the goals but had to come off injured in the first half.

On that win Connor said: “It was a good victory to get especially after the loss we had against St Helens. It has given us some confidence again and I thought we played well.

“Buddy has played great this season but has been so unfortunate with injuries. Every time you think he will get on a run of games he gets a knock or pulls something. I’m so frustrated for the lad as he’s done great for us so far this season.”
