A new gym operator is set to take over the former Total Fitness gym at Waterloo – and it could open before Christmas.

Huddersfield Hub can reveal that a new “regional” operator, which has other gyms, has agreed a lease and lawyers are drawing up the paperwork.

A spokesman for the agents of Diamond Business Parks Ltd said it would “100%” remain a gym. Terms had been agreed and a lease would be signed this month.

The landlord will then undertake some works on the building before the tenant gets the keys.

Alec Michael, a partner at Michael Steel & Co in Leeds, said: “It is expected the gym will open this side of Christmas. The company operates at a regional, rather than a national level, and has other facilities.

“The new operator is keen to open this side of Christmas as January is traditionally the busiest time of the year for gyms.”

The former Total Fitness gym, on the Tandem Industrial Estate in Wakefield Road, is one of Huddersfield’s biggest gyms and also has a swimming pool.

It had been open for 20 years and had a loyal client base. There was widespread shock when Total Fitness announced back in March that it wouldn’t re-open its Huddersfield gym after lockdown.

Total Fitness re-opened its other gyms but the Huddersfield one was ordered to close as part of the terms of a Company Voluntary Arrangement agreed with creditors.
