Kirkheaton Primary School pupils have cleaned up an area near their school.

More than 20 youngsters got to work litter picking in Kirkheaton playground and Fields Way.

Teacher Gianna Shepherd said: “We chose it because we felt it was an area that could do with a tidy as it is a popular communal area for children in our village.”

By the end of the clean-up the children had collected almost 20lb of rubbish.

Gianna added: “The children enjoyed it and would like to open this up to families on weekends every half term. The clean-up exemplifies the school’s four Rs which are respect, rights, responsibility and resilience outside school and in the community.”

Children were given environmentally friendly bamboo toothbrushes during the weekly headteacher celebration assembly to recognise their efforts and show the school’s pride in them.
