A community charity shop in Marsden is celebrating its 21st birthday with a fashion show – of ‘pre-loved’ clothes modelled by local people.

The Cuckoo’s Nest Fashion Show of Autumn/Winter Clothes, backed by Marsden WI, will be held at Marsden Parochial Hall on Saturday September 17 (2pm-4pm) and tickets are available now.

The Cuckoo’s Nest is a community charity shop in Peel Street in the heart of Marsden, run by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Profits raised go to support community groups and organisations which benefit the people of Marsden.

Twice a year local groups and organisations are invited to apply for a grant for up to £1,000 each.

The project, twice a winner at the Examiner Community Awards, also likes to support wider international appeals where it can. Recently a week’s takings were donated to the DEC Ukraine humanitarian appeal.

Overall, more than £700,000 has been donated through its grants scheme.

A massive community fundraising effort allowed the Cuckoo’s Nest to buy the shop where it’s based and the flat above. Some £70,000 was raised for the deposit and the building was finally purchased in 2020.

The fashion show, staged with the help of Marsden WI Cuckoos, is the first in a series of events to celebrate the 21 years.

It’s the third time such a ‘pre-loved’ fashion show has been held and it’s always popular – and great fun.

All the clothes will be donations from the Cuckoo’s Nest which will be available to buy after the show.

The models are all local people of different shapes, sizes and ages who have generously donated their time.

Tickets are on sale now at the Cuckoo’s Nest at £6 each (under 5s free). Tickets include free refreshments and entry into a draw to win a bottle of prosecco. Local businesses have generously donated raffle prizes too.

All the money raised will go towards essential building repairs.
