A special event was held at Huddersfield Town Hall to celebrate some of the incredible volunteers across Kirklees.

The Mayor of Kirklees’ Recognition for Volunteering highlighted those unsung heroes of the community who modestly say they are ‘just helping out’ or ‘lending a hand.’

Volunteers and voluntary groups were put forward by councillors for each of the 23 wards in Kirklees. Each one was presented with a special award at the event also attended by council leader Clr Cathy Scott and chief executive Steve Mawson.

Mayor of Kirklees Clr Cahal Burke said: “Volunteers are people who care about the communities they live in and the environment around them. They give their time generously to enhance the lives of their communities.

“Without them, people would not be able to make friendships that help villages and towns thrive and enhance everybody’s wellbeing.

“All villages and towns need volunteers. They give their time generously to enhance the lives of their communities. That’s what all of our volunteers do, and that’s why we celebrated the work they do.

“I want to congratulate all those who were put forward and say an enormous thank you to all the volunteers in our borough who make a huge difference.”
