Iyrwah Gooden scored his 20th goal of the season as Emley cruised to a seventh win on the trot with a 3-1 victory over Hemsworth Miners Welfare at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday.

Goals from Alex Metcalfe, Junayd Cassius-Gill and Gooden produced a vital win for the Pewits which leaves them third in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division sitting six points behind second-placed Winterton Rangers.

Metcalfe set Emley on their way from the penalty spot after just five minutes. That could, and perhaps should, have opened the floodgates with Gooden and Donae Lawrence both having one-on-ones that didn’t quite fall for them.

Emley had to wait until the 60th minute for a second when Lawrence crossed for Cassius-Gill to slot home. Nash Connolly pulled a goal back for Hemsworth and that gave them a bit of belief.

However, Gooden sealed the points 10 minutes from time – and what a goal it was. Steve Smith delivered a pinpoint cross from the right and Gooden (above) timed his volley to perfection.

The Pewits now turn their attention to a League Cup quarter-final at home to Thackley on Tuesday March 7 (7.45).
