Huddersfield RUFC is all set to launch two rugby initiatives aimed at increasing participation in the sport and improving personal fitness in the New Year.

As part of the RFU’s ‘The Touch Union’, the club is offering touch rugby sessions which are free to attend and open to anyone aged 16 and above.

They will be led by Jess Bunyard, head of women’s and girls’ rugby at the club. Launching on Thursday January 6 and taking place between 7pm and 8pm each Thursday thereafter Jess describes the events as a great way to enjoy social fitness and to achieve fitness goals in the New Year.

Jess said: “Whether you’ve played rugby before and you’re looking to reconnect with the sport or you’re brand new to it and just want to give it a go the sessions are open to men and women. The Touch Union sessions offer a great way to get active again in January. We can modify the sessions to suit your level of fitness. Our aim is for it to be as inclusive as possible.”

The RFU/Allianz Inner Warrior sessions for women are set to re-commence on Tuesday January 18 and run from 7.15pm-8.30pm and Jess is very keen to recruit more women into the Huddersfield RUFC fold. They are open to all women aged 18 and over.

She said: “Women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Over two million people watched England women play in the autumn internationals in 2021 and here at Huddersfield RUFC we are offering women the opportunity to give the game a try for free.

“Whether you have seen a rugby match or you’re completely new, anyone can come and give it a go. The Inner Warrior session is aimed at women new to the sport. Our sessions are welcoming and enjoyable no matter your level of fitness.

“You don’t have to attend our session because you want to play a rugby match, you can join in the Inner Warrior event just to meet new friends, gain confidence, get fitter or learn new skills all in a fun environment.”

Here’s what some of the players who joined in last year had to say, some of whom had no previous experience of rugby:

“I enjoy how we work as a team and the different games. No matter what or how we go wrong we find a way to improve each training session.”

“We are all becoming stronger, fitter, faster and we epitomise what a team is all about. We all support and encouragement each other.”

“The team spirit is awesome because I feel that everyone genuinely wants the best outcome for everyone.”

“Joining the team and starting to play rugby was easily the best decision I’ve made all year. Whether you’re experienced or have never picked up a rugby ball before, you’re part of the team from day one.”

“It’s such a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere and a great group of women. I feel like I’m progressing every week and really enjoying the journey. If you’re hesitant about whether to join, I’d really encourage you to give it a try I can promise you’ll be given a warm welcome!”
