Golcar United went back to the top of the North West Counties Division One North table with a 2-0 win over Atherton with Buddy Cox scoring both goals.

Golcar were sat third going into the match however a win for the Weavers has propelled them to the top of the table ahead of their rivals who didn’t play.

Holker Old Boys’ game against Cleator Moor Celtic was called off due to a waterlogged pitch while unbeaten Bury AFC – three points behind Golcar but with two games in hand – will go back top if they beat Nelson on Tuesday December 14.

Golcar controlled the game throughout and didn’t repeat the mistakes of recent matches when they let the lead slip.

The Weavers’ first goal came in the 11th minute when a throw-in was taken, the ball was crossed into the Atherton box and Cox was there to score.

Golcar doubled the lead just seven minutes later. A foul by Atherton gave the Weavers a chance to pile on the pressure once more. A free-kick was floated in by Golcar captain Dan Stocker and Cox steered it home at the back post.

Next week Golcar take on Cleator Moor who sit in the lower reaches of the division.
