Newsome Panthers have officially been told that they will play in the Yorkshire Men’s Rugby League Premier Division this year.

Last year the Panthers had an ‘Invincible Season’ where the club won all five competitions they entered and went through the whole season unbeaten, winning all 23 matches. They won the Division 2 League Shield, the Division 2 Grand Final, the Holliday Cup, the League Cup and the Supplementary Cup.

They have now had it confirmed that they will move up two divisions to play in the Premier Division.

Led by coach and former pro player Richie Hawkyard, Newsome have plans to eventually be promoted to the National Conference League.

On finally getting the promotion confirmation from the RFL, club chairman Steve Roberts said: “We are all delighted to receive such great news.

“After winning the league two years on the trot we thought we deserved to be promoted into the Premier Division. Obviously we know this level is going to be a lot tougher but there is no reason why we can’t compete at this level.

“Whilst we are being realistic we are ambitious enough to say that we want to be challenging at the top of the Premier Division. There are some good teams in this league and we’ve already beaten them on a few occasions in cup competitions in previous years.

“We sort of know what to expect but it’s going to be a great journey for us and we want as many people to join us on it as possible. Our ultimate aim is to make it to the NCL but first and foremost we need to perform in this league.”
