A Colne Valley charity dedicated to helping people with dementia now has a weekly memory café in Slaithwaite … and the demand is continually growing.

Gwennie’s Getaways runs the café every Tuesday from 11am until 2pm at The Watershed on Bridge Street in the village.

It’s free but donations are always welcome and it’s for anyone living with mild to moderate dementia and their carers. There is no need to book, people can just turn up and join in with the session which also provides advice and support.

Lunch is provided along with endless tea and coffee and different activities each week.

The café has recently been involved in a pilot project with the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees Dementia Hub which is looking at Dementia Meeting Centres in Kirklees – safe, social spaces with lots of activities and opportunities to chat with health and social care professionals.

Gwennie’s Getaways charity manager Joanne Gibson said: “When we started the memory cafe sometimes we only had one or two people attending and now we regularly see 26 people each week.

“We are working towards becoming the dementia hub for the Colne Valley area.”

Gwennie’s Getaways also provides families living with dementia a respite break at seaside caravans based in Filey and Blackpool.
