A double from top scorer Ash Flynn sent Golcar United clear at the top of the North West Counties Division One North.

The Weavers clinched a 3-2 victory at AFC Darwen – the second time they’ve beaten them in two weeks – and go three points clear at the top as previous leaders Bury AFC were in cup action.

Golcar go to bottom club St Helens on Saturday before Bury are next in league action on Sunday allowing the Weavers the chance to open up a six-point gap to put pressure on the still-unbeaten title favourites.

On Saturday Golcar were quickly 2-0 ahead with goals from Buddy Cox and Flynn inside the first seven minutes.

The home side got a goal back in the 24th minute when prolific Leon Creech dispatched the ball from 12 yards out to score his 21st goal of the season.

Golcar went in at half-time leading 2-1 but it didn’t take the hosts long to equalise in the second half. Within six minutes of the restart Creech was on the scoresheet again to make it 2-2.

Flynn, though, secured the three points in the 70th minute with his 26th goal of the season so far.
