James Walshaw struck his fifth goal for the club as Emley AFC stretched their unbeaten run and closed the gap on leaders North Ferriby to just two points.
A 3-1 victory at Frickley means it’s now 20 matches in all competitions since an opening day defeat to North Ferriby, and the Pewits were able to cut the deficit at the top as the leaders’ game at Barton was called off.
It was Emley who drew first blood in the 38th minute after finally breaking down a stubborn Frickley defence. Emley were awarded a corner which Ross Hardaker whipped in from the right, the ball curled over everyone and into the net with a hand from the keeper to make it 1-0.
That’s how the score stayed until the break. Emley doubled their lead in the 59th minute. A teasing ball into the danger area wasn’t cleared; it fell to Walshaw who stabbed home for his fifth goal since signing on dual registration forms from Liversedge. Walshaw scored his first two Emley goals – also at Frickley and also a 3-1 victory – in the FA Vase last month.
The hosts struck back in the 75th minute as a sweeping move from left to right saw them find space for Charlie Clegg to drill past Declan Lambton to make it 2-1.
Whilst Frickley threatened a comeback the game was put to bed in the dying minutes as Joe Clegg rifled home a rasping effort to clinch the points and edge his side closer to the top.
Emley are in FA Vase action on Saturday when Squires Gate visit the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.
