Huddersfield Town Women FC fought until the very end to beat Middlesbrough in the League Cup at the Stafflex Arena on Sunday. The Terriers won 3-2 with Ria Montgomery scoring the winner to send the club through to the third round.
Kate Mallin grabbed a brace and helped turn the result around after the home side went 1-0 down within six minutes.
Felicity Jones scored Boro’s opener. Rebecca Olley’s shot turned through ball was perfectly weighted for Jones to get on the end of and place it past Town keeper Bethan Davies to make it 1-0.
The Terriers equalised in the 23rd minute. Mallin was given too much space and calmly struck the ball past the on-rushing Todd to make it 1-1.
Mallin then grabbed Town’s second goal of the afternoon in the 31st minute. The Terriers worked the ball around Todd in the visitors’ goal and Mallin was on hand to easily tap the ball into an empty net to make it 2-1.
Town went into the break leading but they knew they’d been in a contest. The second half started just as frantically as the first with Middlesbrough looking to level things up.
They finally got what they deserved on 63 minutes when Elysia Boddy struck a superb free-kick which flew into the Terriers’ net to level the scores again.

Both sides pushed for the victory but it was Montgomery, a recent arrival from Blackburn Rovers, who finished off a well-worked move to slot home what proved to be the winner in the 70th minute.
