Ever wanted to try your hand at crown green bowling? Well, there’s a free taster session at Greenhead Park in Huddersfield on Easter Monday.

Run by Huddersfield Bowls Development, qualified coaches will teach beginners the basics between noon and 3pm.

Huddersfield Bowls Development secretary Richard Armitage said: “With over 50 bowling greens in and around Huddersfield you’re bound to find somewhere in your locality where you can bowl socially with friends or competitively. Crown green bowling is a sport for all ages and enjoyed by many thousands throughout the summer months.

“You could start on Easter Monday at Greenhead Park by just turning up between noon and 3pm where qualified coaches will welcome you on the green and give you the rudiments of the game. Come as a family or on your own, you’re bound to receive a welcome and have some fun whilst trying a new sport.

“Huddersfield is blessed with many of the country’s top bowlers and they all started playing at a very young age. There are junior leagues for children as young as seven going up to 16 years old, and they play in teams or individual competitions.

“Teenagers are welcomed into open age teams in the many leagues catering for both genders and some mixed gender leagues. There are also very popular leagues for over 60s with players playing into their 90s. It’s great to see three generations playing together in the same team.

“All you’ll need when you turn up on Monday is a pair of flat soled shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. The coaches will select suitable bowls for you and you’ll soon be bowling ‘touchers.’ But be prepared – it’s not as easy as it looks!”

If you’d like to book a slot on the green e-mail huddbowls@gmail.com or just turn up. There will be further sessions on May 8, June 18, July 23 and August 28.

Mr Armitage added: “If you think you’ve the makings of a bowler and would like to do more, Huddersfield Bowls Development will be holding two-part coaching sessions at various bowling greens. Just let them have your contact details and they’ll be in touch and also guide you to a local bowling club.”
