Mark Thomas, hailed as the UK’s ‘godfather of political comedy’, returns to stand-up after a long hiatus and is bringing his newest show, Gaffa Tapes, to Marsden Mechanics on Friday November 8 (8pm).

Mark’s now famous mix of stand-up, theatre, journalism and the odd bout of performance art has made him one of the oldest surviving alternative comics. If you don’t know what Mark does, ask your parents. Or grandparents!

Often referred to as the ‘godfather of political comedy’ – among many other things – Mark has been performing comedy for nearly 40 years.

On Gaffa Tapes, Mark said: “The show is basically me screaming about anything that’s inside my head at the moment, especially with what’s going on politically and socially.

“My last shows have all been theatre, we won awards, we’ve toured all over the country, we’ve been to Australia… and I’m totally, totally skint!

“So I thought I’ll go back to stand up just to make some cash! But, of course, stand up is my first love, and it’s great to be back.”

In his time, Mark has won eight awards for performing, three for human rights work… and one he invented for himself.

He has forced a politician to resign, changed laws on tax and protest, become the Guinness Book of Records world-record holder for number of protests in 24 hours, taken the police to court three times and won (the fourth is in the pipeline), walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank (that’s 724km) and generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset (shall we say) the right people.

Tickets are £18.50 or £12 concessions with £1.56 booking fee.
