The nation may still be in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic but four of the county’s top rugby union clubs have announced their plans for a return to rugby should the present restrictions be eased this spring.
Huddersfield RUFC, Leeds Tykes, Otley and Wharfedale have joined forces along with Leeds-based travel company, Ventur to organise their own tournament.
Each team will play the others at home and away on Saturdays, commencing on May 8, with games played under RFU modified rules. Following the initial rounds all four teams will compete in a Finals Day at the Emerald Headingley Stadium on Saturday June 19 for a £10,000 prize fund. The top two teams will compete for the Ventur Cup and the other two will contest the Ventur Plate.
Phil Davies, Leeds Tykes Director of Rugby, said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the players, coaches and supporters to play and watch again and it’s a much needed boost for the clubs involved. They are all very keen to resume and we all appreciate the support of sponsors, Ventur too”
Peter Wilcock, of Ventur, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this tournament and I know the players of all four clubs are desperate to play again.”
The opening fixtures will be announced shortly but the playing of them will be dependent on a change in the current government guidelines.
