Christmas is coming to Oakes this weekend and there’s something to get everyone in the festive spirit.

The Oakes Winter Wonderland will be held at the Focal Centre in New Hey Road on Saturday and Sunday December 11 and 12 (10am-4pm).

Santa will be in his grotto – pre-booking is necessary at £5 per child – and there is a special hour each day dedicated to children with sensory issues who may find the noise, bright lights and queues too much to cope with.

Helpers from Woodley School have also been teaching Santa and his elves makaton to make the event as inclusive as possible.

There will be a vast array of stalls selling all kinds of gifts and goodies from wax melts to handmade pens, candles to artisan chocolate. There will also be clothing, greetings cards, knitted crafts, face-painting, hair-braiding and wreath-making.

Organiser Tracy Sutcliffe, of Honey Bee Sweets Shop, said it was an exciting event for the whole community.

She added: “We are supporting the Give a Child a Gift campaign run by the Salvation Army and gifts can be dropped off on the day.

“Donations are being made to Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Growing Focal which is a community project to build a sustainable community garden for and by local people growing vegetables and flowers throughout the year.”
