Moldgreen ARLFC have had a tough first few weeks to the season in the Yorkshire Men’s RL League however head coach Antony Collins is staying positive and working on improvements. He’s also updated us on what’s happening behind the scenes at the club.
Looking at how things are going on the pitch, Collins said: “After a slow start to the season, we are starting to get some traction. We have some players returning from bans and injuries which are coming just at the right time.
“After a couple of tough defeats for the first team to a well drilled Bradford Dudley Hill team firstly in the league and then in the cup, we got back to winning ways with the 2nd team beating local rivals Newsome Panthers 32-20 in a great game. This shows that the amateur game in Huddersfield is on the up.
“With our team starting to gel you could see some of the hard work that the lads have been putting in on the training field coming into effect.
“The first half was a really tight affair with both teams playing some good rugby. Moldgreen took a slender two point lead into half-time 12-10.
“The second half saw Newsome suffer with a few injuries and, as the half wore on, their players who were toughing it out started to show fatigue. This allowed the younger lads playing for us to exploit the gaps opening up in their defence. We started to open up a gap on the scoreboard and a last minute try from us made the score look more comfortable than it actually was.”
Speaking about the work going on off the pitch, Collins added: “We have been working hard behind the scenes at the club to put some solid foundations in place, so that we can start to grow and establish ourselves once again as a top amateur team in Huddersfield. With this we would like to announce that we have appointed Phil Shotton as club captain.”
On his new role Shotton said: “I am immensely proud to be offered this role and I’m enjoying the opportunity to help develop and grow the club.”
Collins added: “In his short time at Moldgreen Phil has been impressed with the young players that we have had come through the Moldgreen junior section who are now playing in the open age. That was one of the main reasons he decided to take the role.
“Hopefully you all join me in supporting him in this role and wishing him the best of luck.”
Finally, Collins wanted to thank the club sponsors for their continued support and said: “Thanks to our amazing sponsors the team have been kitted out with new training and leisure wear so we would like to thank the following: Holme Valley Cooling, Baimbridge Flooring, The FM Company, Faux Glow Tanning Salon, YOU financial, HSJ Shapes and Panels, OB Building and Roofing, Tattsue’s, Heaton Landscaping, CH Electrical, Dyson Developments, Dj From the Heart, AB Concrete Pumping, Gorilla Grappling, Extreme Conditioning, J Paxman Landscaping, NRS Masonry, EM Car Repairs and Active Sports.”
