Golcar badminton star Marcus Ellis and his partner Lauren Smith won a silver medal in the mixed doubles at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Marcus and Lauren were beaten to the gold medal by Singapore’s Terry Hee and Jessica Tan this morning.
The couple, partners off court as well as on it, are ranked No10 in the world and went down to a surprise straight-games defeat, losing 21-16, 21-15.
Olympic bronze medallist Marcus has now won four Commonwealth Games medals and was a little disappointed the couple couldn’t improve on the silver they won at the last games in 2018.
Speaking immediately afterwards Marcus, 32, said: “I feel we could have given lots better today but our opponents have been on fire this last two weeks and it was always going to be tough.
“Another day, another competition it could have been different. On the day they were better than us and we have to accept that.”
Lauren said it wasn’t to be and added: “We fought every minute, we fought every point and we’ve also savoured every moment. The atmosphere was incredible and the crowd was behind us so much. It just meant the world.”
