Golcar United boss Ash Connor believes his side needs one more win to secure third place in the North West Counties Division One North table. If the club can confirm that place it will mean a home tie in the play-offs.
And former Huddersfield Town defender and Golcar coach Joe Skarz reckons promotion for the Weavers would match the achievement of his promotion to the Championship with Rotherham United.
United have had some shaky form of late which has meant both Bury AFC and Holker Old Boys have been able to pull away as the top two teams. Golcar’s aim is to go into the play-off campaign on the back of a run of positive results.
Boss Connor said: “I really believe we just need three points now, it’s in our own hands and as I’ve said before if you had offered us a play-off spot at the start of the season then we’d have snapped your hand off.
“I always expected Bury to win the league and Holker have done great pushing us and them all the way. Yes, it would have been nice to go for the title but securing our play-off place would be a real achievement and should be the thing we are now focused on.
“I would like to take a bit of form into the play-offs and so it’d be great to get a few wins on the board.”
Experienced player and club coach Skarz agrees with the sentiments of the gaffer. He insists the squad and dressing room are ready to take on these last big challenges.
Skarz said: “Ash and Gav have done an amazing job. We set out what we wanted to achieve at the beginning of the season and by reaching the play-offs we will have completed the first task. We want to win the last few games to go into the play-offs with some form.
“Our dressing room is strong and, yes, we’ve had a frustrating patch but we want to bounce back. There are some brilliant lads in there and I know if we focus on firstly making the play-offs, then winning them, we can achieve it.

“I feel healthy and strong enough to continue to play. I love the club and that’s why I put so much effort in. I look back and I wish I’d joined sooner.
“Achieving promotion with Golcar will be as big as when I achieved it with Rotherham going up to the Championship. It will mean that much to me to succeed with this Golcar side. What we are creating is history.”
Golcar travel to South Liverpool today (Saturday). The Weavers defeated them 4-0 at home earlier this season. However just because it was a big win last time out doesn’t mean it will be easy this time around.
Connor said: “South Liverpool are a good side, they sit in mid-table and have beaten some good teams of late like Bacup Borough. We can’t take them lightly, they play on a 3G pitch and so the game at our place will be very different to this one.
“If we can win this one hopefully it’s the start of a good run into the play-offs.”
