There’s fit, there’s super fit and then there’s Hyrox.

This is the new global fitness regime and, ultimately, race that’s done indoors and Northern Fitness Gym in Linthwaite is the first to introduce it to Huddersfield.

The gym run by community-minded Kev Bower has invested £15,000 in its Hyrox Hangar in the gym which involves eight different cardio exercises with a 1km run between each one. The exercises include a sled push, a sled pull, rowing, sandbag lunges, burpee broad jumps, a farmer’s carry and wall ball.

The Hyrox Hangar covers 6,000ft across two rooms and a full circuit takes around 90 minutes to complete.

Hyrox was launched in Germany in 2017 and quickly became the fastest growing fitness sport in the world.

Kev and 69-year-old Northern Fitness member Don Wray travelled to Malmo in Sweden in October to take part in an international Hyrox contest and came second in their age bracket.

Kev said: “It’s a new, innovative way to train and is very inclusive. People can complete a Hyrox as a single, doubles, mixed doubles or in a team of four. There are now competitions worldwide.”

Northern Fitness Gym members are competing in London this month, Stockholm next month and Manchester in January with the aim to send a team to Malaga next April.

The competitions are usually held in huge exhibition centres and this year there have been more than 40 races globally involving 90,000 athletes and 50,000 spectators.

But people don’t have to compete.

Kev says: “With no finishing time restriction and no qualification required to enter, anyone can have a go at Hyrox. It’s a race to run at your own pace with the continuous support of friends, family and fellow participants.

“While some people train to compete, others just use it for training and camaraderie.”

Hyrox is included in the Boot Camp membership at Northern Fitness but potential new members are welcome to have a go for free first.
