A historic former wool merchant’s home in Edgerton has undergone an impressive restoration.

The Grade II-listed property in New North Road – once known as Belle Vue House – has now become an office rental space called The Highfields Suite.

Solicitor Richard Dean and his GP wife Dr Nicola Dann took on the restoration at the height of the pandemic and have now signed their first tenant on a five-year contract.

Richard, who is director of The Highfields Suite, says they’ve created an “office experience that is a home away from home.”

The first tenant is Limitless Care Ltd which will take on two lower ground floor office rental suites – The Jackson Suite and the Lovett Suite.

Approximately 1,500 sq ft of outdated office space has been renovated. Stunning original features, including open fireplaces, oak shutters, cornices, sashes, balustrades and stonework, have been carefully restored and complement modernised office and meeting room space, including a stunning vaulted meeting room with LED lighting.

The suites have all been named after the people who once trod the imposing Grade II listed property’s floors.

Originally named Belle Vue House, Joseph Lowenthal is believed to have inherited the house from his brother Louis in 1884.

Joseph, a German-born wool merchant, was a prominent Freemason who lived at The Grange, Halifax Road, Huddersfield, and established the Lowenthal Bros in 1848, in Huddersfield.

His daughter, the late Bertha Lowenthal, a suffragette, was a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union and became vice-president of the Huddersfield branch in 1907.

Joseph later sold the building to Thomas Holliday, part of the Read Holliday Chemicals family dynasty.

Kumbi Midzi, operations manager for Limitless Care, said they chose to move their business in order to better accommodate their growing company.

Kumbi said: “We chose The Highfields Suite for its location and spacious rooms, and for the quality of refurbishment. Everything has been finished to a very high standard.”

Kumbi and his wife Matilda set up Limitless Care five years ago. The independent care company provides non-medical home care that allows people to continue living in the comfort and familiar environment of their own home.

“It’s nice to think that we now have the space that will enable our business to continue to grow.”

Mr Dean added: “We are delighted to welcome Kumbi and his team. I am pleased that when Kumbi was looking for new offices, our location and the space we had available were the perfect fit for the growing business.”

The Highfields Suite, which has free on-site parking, has two suites – The Lowenthal Suite and The Dickinson Suite – are still available to rent. Smaller, lockable office space in The Holliday Suite can also be rented monthly.

Richard said: “For good work you need a space that works for you. Whether you’re looking for a permanent desk, a private office, or a shared space at a communal desk, within The Highfields Suite you’ll find the workspace that’s right for you and your business.”
