Ash Flynn has made a surprise return to Golcar United and will join up with the squad just a week before the new season begins.

Flynn was Golcar’s 33-goal top scorer last season as they won promotion via the play-offs to go into the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Huddersfield-based Flynn is a prolific striker who was always going to be in demand. Flynn moved to Leeds-based Yorkshire Amateur, a club relegated from the NPL into the same division as Golcar after failing to meet ground grading requirements.

Earlier this month changes at the club meant the sudden departure of manager Nathan Cartman and members of the playing squad. As soon as Flynn became available Golcar moved quickly to secure his signature, beating off competition from a handful of rival clubs.

Joint manager Gav Connor said: “Ash was a great player for us last season and we didn’t want him to go. Yorkshire Amateur offered him a better deal than what we could so he went there.

“However due to them having some problems, he’s decided to re-sign for us which is great. He’s a local lad and we are on his doorstep so it’s perfect for both of us.

“We know there were others after him but I think he loved it here last year and he knows how we play and so we are delighted to get him.”

Flynn said it was great to be back and added: “We had a great year at Golcar winning promotion last year and nobody expected us to have the season we had.

“I know what Golcar is about. They have a good fan base for this level of football and a good management team with Ash, Gav and Skarzy. I have some very good mates at Golcar and they all messaged me when I left Ammers asking me to come back.

“I’ve worked hard during pre-season and I’m looking forward to it.”

Golcar look to have exciting firepower up front having 25-goal attacking midfielder Dan Naidole and also new signing Kayle Price, a pacy striker, who scored 34 goals last season for Steeton.

Connor added: “Having Ash back and playing with Kayle should give us a lot of firepower and goals. They are different types of strikers and that’s great. We are looking forward to seeing them both in action for sure.”

Golcar kick off the new campaign away at Thackley on Saturday July 30.

Huddersfield Hub will be sponsoring Flynn for the 2022-23 campaign.
