Colleagues at First4Lawyers delivered a Christmas cracker of a donation to their local food bank in Huddersfield.

For the fifth year running, the business donated £1,000 to The Welcome Centre and delivered more than 120 food items collected as part of a ‘reverse advent calendar’ by their team.

The largest independent food bank in the UK, the charity handed out enough food to make 368,000 meals last year – more than 1,000 every day – to people across South Kirklees.

As well as food and other essential items, volunteers also provide emotional and practical support such as advice on budgeting, benefits and access to computers.

Charlie Taylor, fundraising manager at The Welcome Centre, said: “Every year, thousands of children and adults in the local community need our support and the need keeps rising.

“We are a lifeline to people at their lowest but we can only provide that help thanks to the generosity of our community and businesses like First4Lawyers which we are proud to say is one of our longstanding supporters.”

Over nine million people in the UK experience hunger so extreme that they are reliant on charity handouts for food, recent research by the Trussell charity found. That is one million more living in poverty than five years ago.

Qamar Anwar, managing director of First4Lawyers, said: “Huddersfield has been our home since we started 16 years ago and it is heartbreaking to think that so many local people are struggling.

“We’re proud to support The Welcome Centre and proud of our brilliant staff for coming together to collect food. It’s heartwarming to know that our collective efforts will make a difference.”
