Huddersfield RUFC hosted a hugely successful women’s touch rugby festival on Sunday October 2. More than 50 women from the Huddersfield, Ossett, Rochdale, Hemsworth and Sheffield University rugby clubs took part in the ‘6 a side’ event.

With the emphasis on participation and recruitment organiser Jess Bunyard, head of women’s and girls’ rugby at the Lockwood Park club, was delighted with the outcome.

She said: “The day was a great success and is part of the plan to grow the women’s team at Huddersfield RUFC. With the Women’s Rugby World Cup taking place in New Zealand at the moment, we are inviting all inspired women to come and give rugby a go.”

The next women’s event at Huddersfield is on Saturday October 15, commencing at 11.30am. It is a ‘Give Rugby A Try’ session, taking place as part of the RFU’s Inner Warrior campaign, to get more women involved in the sport.

Jess added: “All women are welcome to take part in our taster session, no matter what your personal level of fitness. Our team set up offers opportunities for women of all abilities. Whether people want to use the sessions for improving fitness, playing non-contact games or working their way up to trying the contact game.”

The Inner Warrior ‘Try Women’s Rugby’ taster is free to attend and places can be booked by going to the following link.

On Tuesday November 8 the Huddersfield women are welcoming female members of the West Yorkshire Police force to one of their training sessions. Jess is hoping that a fruitful link will be forged which will further strengthen her growing team.

In the Women’s Rugby World Cup, which began on October 8, England start as favourites in the tournament on the back of an unbeaten 25-match run. They beat Fiji 84-19 in the opening match.
