A crowd of more than 800 watched Golcar United go down to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Winterton Rangers in the NCEL League Cup final.

A large contingent of Golcar fans made the trip to Doncaster Rovers’ Eco-Power Stadium on Tuesday night.

Winterton went ahead just after half-time before Kayle Price equalised with his 30th goal of the season. Leon Henry was sent off for a second yellow card and Winterton scored again to lift the trophy.

Player-coach Joe Skarz reflected on the game and said: “The team played well and the sending off changed the whole dynamic of the game especially with it being so soon after we had scored.

“Everyone associated with the club should be proud of how we represented Golcar United and in every final there’s a winner and loser. We congratulate Winterton on their promotion and cup success.”

Also speaking after the game, attacking midfielder Dan Naidole said: “I am gutted to lose but proud of the team. I thought we dug in and played well and had good spells in the 90 minutes.

“After pulling it back to 1-1 I felt we could go on to get another but football changes so quickly and the sending off killed us. We then had to change shape and move players about which went in Winterton’s favour.”
