A project is to be launched in Huddersfield next week to help empower young black men.

Education 2000, a registered charity, has received £52,000 from the National Lottery to deliver the ‘Huddersfield Black Empowerment Programme’ for young black men aged 18 to 30.

The programme, which will involve a series of workshops from January 2025, will be launched at an event on Friday November 22 (2pm-5pm) at St John’s Resource Centre, St John’s Road, Huddersfield.

Project manager Dominic Pinnock said young black men faced a number of challenges such as: mental health problems; over-representation in the criminal justice system; a lack of role models; discrimination and cultural barriers.

Mr Pinnock added: “All these factors can impact upon the life chances of young black men and this programme will empower them and help to address these inequalities.”

Education 2000, alongside Kirklees Local TV, the National Careers Service and others, will host the introductory event.

Speakers include: entrepreneur Dr Milton Brown, who will talk about business development, and Natalie Pinnock-Hamilton MBE and Phil James, who will speak about local black history. There will also be a speaker from the National Careers Service.

The first programme workshops will be delivered at Northfield Hall in Brackenhall as follows:

Friday 17th January 2025, 1pm-4pm – Career Development
