A former Kirklees Council Cabinet member has announced she is to stand down as a councillor at the next local elections.

Labour councillor Naheed Mather has represented Dalton since 2012 and will not seek re-election in May 2024.

Clr Mather, who served as Cabinet member for the environment until last year, has issued the following message to residents in Dalton.

She said: “As I reflect on the past 12 years, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my decision not to stand for re-election to Kirklees Council in 2024.

“Serving as your representative for Dalton Ward since 2012 has been an incredible journey of challenges and achievement.

“I entered politics with a commitment to fostering positive change and addressing the needs of our community.

“Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving as a Cabinet member, taking on various portfolio responsibilities within Kirklees Council. It has been an honour to contribute to the growth and well-being of our district.

“I believe that three terms, totalling 12 years, is sufficient and that I should step down and make way for democratic renewal.

“I am deeply grateful to the residents of Dalton who entrusted me with their votes, allowing me to represent them in the council.

“Until May 2024, I will continue to work to the best of my abilities for Dalton, ensuring that your voices are heard and your concerns addressed.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who has helped – the residents, dedicated officers and fellow councillors.

“Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you.”

Clr Mather was awarded the MBE for services to the community in West Yorkshire in 2003.
