After a tumultuous five years with the Huddersfield YMCA complex going into administration, followed by the Covid shutdown, Huddersfield YMCA RUFC was reborn as Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC in September 2022, with a renewed focus on mini and junior rugby.
Partnerships with three local primary schools, a growing team of coaches, volunteers and parents – and with the generous support of sponsors – junior/mini membership and participation has increased by more than 1,000% in the past 18 months.
Some of the senior players also helped this growth by volunteering to pay for an annual junior membership – dubbed ‘Sponsor a Mini.’
Director of rugby Andy Appleby said: “Growing from a handful of kids in July 2022 to a fully-fledged, thriving section with teams competing in every age group from under-6 to under-11, in such a short time, is something everyone involved with the club is rightly proud of.
“We’re excited to see the kids and their families enjoying their rugby, learning new skills and making new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
“We’re keen to offer the best rugby experience possible and to attract kids from all backgrounds to come and get involved.
“We’re a welcoming, family friendly club and put fun and development at the forefront of everything we do.”
Laund Hill under-12 Junior Roses Girls Team played their first ever fixture last month, at home against Dronfield RUFC.
Andy added: “Most of the girls have been playing for less than 12 months and the progress they’ve made in that time is incredible.
“There’s a fantastic bond within the group and they have a real passion for the game. We’re all really proud of them.
“They were given a rousing reception and were cheered on by the Senior Roses Ladies Team, once again showing that we really are One Club.”
