University of Huddersfield Vice-Chancellor Prof Bob Cryan has appeared on a special map celebrating ‘engineering icons.’

Prof Cryan has just completed his tenure as President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the largest professional engineering body in Europe.

And now he has appeared on a re-imagined map of the London Tube system which recognises individuals who have made their mark in the field of engineering.

The Royal Academy of Engineering joined forces with Transport for London to create the Engineering Icons Tube Map. The re-imagining of the original classic design highlights iconic engineers in place of tube stations.

The engineering-themed tube map was released on National Engineering Day and celebrates the role engineering has played in shaping society.

The map also provides a visual way of inspiring people from all backgrounds to study science, technology, engineering and mathematical subjects, laying the foundations for the next generation of engineering icons.

Prof Cryan, who grew up in Deighton and is a proud graduate of the University of Huddersfield, was recognised for his contribution to engineering and is featured on the ‘Life and Health’ line, sandwiched between Daphne Jackson and James Clerk Maxwell.

Prof Cryan said: “It’s a great honour to be included on this Engineering Icons Tube Map, particularly being sandwiched between Daphne Jackson, the first UK female Professor of Physics, and James Clerk Maxwell, the founder of electromagnetic theory.

“Whilst a young engineering student in Huddersfield I spent hours puzzling Maxwell’s equations so to feature alongside him all these years later is one of those pinch yourself moments and truly a great privilege.”

Prof Cryan holds two first class honours degrees in Engineering and Mathematics, an MBA and two doctorates (PhD and DSc). He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Technology and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

At the age of 30 he was appointed to his first Professorial Chair and at the time was the youngest Professor of Engineering in the UK.

He then went on to become the youngest Vice-Chancellor in the UK at the multi-award-winning University of Huddersfield.

Being recognised as an Engineering Icon is the latest in a string of accolades for Prof Cryan. He is a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire and in 2013 was awarded The Guardian Inspiring Leader Award.

In 2014 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and made a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

In 2015 he received The Daily Telegraph Educate North Inspiring Leader Award and was included in the group of 50 world leading engineers appointed as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
