Iron man Richard Shaw has set himself a final challenge to push his fundraising for motor neurone disease through the £20,000 barrier.
Richard, 45, of Moldgreen, has been inspired to run for the MND Association by former Leeds Rhinos RL star Kevin Sinfield who has completed a series of punishing events to raise money in support of his best friend and former teammate Rob Burrow.
Richard, who coaches at Moldgreen ARLFC, raised £12,000 when he ran the London Marathon last October. That was his first ever marathon.
Starting on May 8, Richard will run seven miles a day and on the seventh day he’ll run from the John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield finishing at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, where both Rob and Kevin made their names.
The last-day distance is an ultra-marathon 41 miles and Richard has booked the week off work and hopes others will join him on some of the runs.
“Kevin Sinfield’s challenges got bigger and bigger and so have mine,” said Richard. “This is my third and final challenge and I’ve raised over £12,000 so far but I want to reach £20,000.
“Running the London Marathon was out of this world. At 18 miles to 21 miles I hit the wall and don’t remember much about it. Then for the last two miles I knew I was going to make it and I was crying tears of joy. It would be great if people can support me again.”
