The Christmas lights season is underway and here’s when the festive illuminations go on across Huddersfield.
Huddersfield town centre
When: Saturday November 19 in St George’s Square, 1pm-7pm.
Info: Kirklees Year of Music with homegrown musical talent and join in with the Frozen sing-along.
Keep a look out for the family-friendly entertainment, with walkabout characters including The Grinch and Gingerbread Men.
Get into the panto spirit with characters from LBT’s Jack and the Beanstalk.
Treat yourself to warm festive refreshments and take a stroll around the Christmas market to pick up a present or two.
Lights switch-on will take place at 6pm with stars from TV’s The Yorkshire Vet.
Golcar
When: Friday November 25
Info: Christmas lights switch-on organised by the Golcar Winkle Club. Enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie while you listen to Huddersfield Youth Brass Band. JJ’s cafe will be open for pie and peas, chip butties and sausage sandwiches.
The fun starts at 5.30pm with Santa arriving at 6.15pm with sweets for the kids. The lights are switched on at 6.30pm, followed by fireworks.
Holmfirth
When: Saturday November 26
Info: Live music from 2.30pm from Valley Beats and Honley Silver Band,
2.30pm – 4.30pm – Try out circus skills in Victoria Park,
3.30pm – 4.30pm – Fire shows in Victoria Park
4.30pm – carols & stilt walking in Market Walk
5pm – tinsel tractor drive through Holmfirth town centre
Meltham
When: Saturday December 3
Info: Meltham Church Hall will host a Christmas market from 10am-4pm. Entry is £1 including a free coffee or mulled wine and mince pie. Santa will be in his grotto and there will be a variety of stalls. Greedy Little Pig will be selling hot pork butties from 2pm-6pm. The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm, accompanied by St Bart’s Bellringers.
Marsden
When: Saturday December 3
Info: Marsden Community Association will be organising a fair with stalls and entertainment during the afternoon with the switch-on in Peel Street at 6pm. There will be a Christmas Lights Switch-on Gig, featuring Marsden Swing, Mucipups and Unity Voices, at Marsden Mechanics from 7pm in aid of Shelter. Entry is by donation (suggested £5).
Slaithwaite
When: Saturday December 3
Info: The tree will be lit in the village centre at 5pm on Saturday, December 3, with fireworks and an after party at Slaithwaite Fire Station on New Street.
Father Christmas will be leading the procession there with proceeds from the event going to The Firefighters Charity and Slaithwaite Christmas Lights.
The Two Gates Christmas Fair at Slaithwaite Community Centre runs from 11am to 3pm and will feature 20 stalls and games along with a Father Christmas grotto.
A Christmas Tree Festival at St James’ Church is open from 10am to 6pm and will feature Christmas craft stalls with music from Slaithwaite Brass Band.
The Globe Arts Christmas Market will feature an open studio with arty fun from 11am to 8pm.
The Clay Mill will have an open day from 1pm to 5pm and a pottery sale will raise money for Colne Valley Help which is based at Slaithwaite Fire Station and runs two food share scheme – one in Slaithwaite and the other in Longwood – where people can turn up to collect essentials such as food or toiletries that have been donated or are surplus supermarket stock.
The Northern Sole street food café is hosting a Christmas market and live music.
Lindley
When: Tuesday December 6
Info: Lindley Christmas Evening will take place on Tuesday December 6 in Lidget Street from 6pm-8pm.
There’s a variety of stalls, attractions and activities, assembled by organisers Lindley Community Group and Love Lindley. Shops will stay open until 8pm and there will be entertainment and music to get visitors into the festive spirit, with Lindley Infants School performing.
