Little Eden Smith is in the pink in more ways than one as she celebrates her seventh birthday with an all-clear from the doctors.

The whole of Holmfirth and most of Huddersfield will be painted pink for the day as Eden and her family celebrate the results of scans which show no signs of neuroblastoma, the aggressive form of cancer which turned their lives upside down.

Following nine-hour surgery and weeks of chemotherapy, Eden is now free of active disease and, while there’s a long way to go, the news is immensely positive.

Eden is feeling much better too and is excited to celebrate her birthday. At lunchtime today (Thursday) she’ll return to Scholes Junior & Infant School where all the children will be out in the playground to sing ‘Happy Birthday.’

But that’s only part of the day and Holmfirth is decked in around four miles of pink bunting with shops decorated in Eden’s favourite colour.

There will be pink everywhere you look as Kirklees Turns Pink for Eden. There will be pink buns, pink ice cream, pink pens, pink beer cans, a pink car and even a pink…sheep!

A Ford Focus has been sprayed pink and branded with Eden’s Army logos and someone has even dyed a sheep called, erm, Fuzzy Bum, who is loving her new colour as she munches grass in a field in Holmbridge.

Eden’s dad Lee said: “Eden is really excited to be celebrating her birthday and seeing pink everywhere she looks!

“Most of all she’s looking forward to going back to school because she’s been shielding and hasn’t been to school for months.”

Lee said the news about Eden’s scans and tests was amazing though there was still a long way to go.

“In four weeks’ time she will have finished radiotherapy and there will be a break before we start immunotherapy but the news is good.”

Eden’s family needs to raise at least £320,000 to send her to New York for pioneering Bivalent Vaccine treatment which would give her the best chance of keeping the cancer at bay.

And Lee revealed more incredible news that the total raised, even before the Pink Day, was £280,000. Last month’s Gardens of Eden sponsored walk is expected to have raised £190,000 alone!

Lee said: “It’s just unbelievable and the walk and the pink day has relieved so much stress for me and Eden’s mum Jen.

“At the start we thought the Pink Day might raise £10,000 or £15,000 but one fundraiser has raised half that on their own. The messages I’ve been getting on a daily basis are amazing and I’m struggling to keep up with it. People have just gone pink crazy.”

Lee said while the cost of the treatment and, therefore, the fundraising target wasn’t quite certain it would be around £320,000 though rising prices, not least fuel costs, could push the total higher.

Even so the target is within striking distance and could be reached next week. There are many more events still to come, including a Tractor Run around the Holme Valley on Saturday which will see 60 tractors hit the streets, and Edenstock, a music festival in May. Dozens of other people are also doing their own fundraisers too.

While Lee might take a breather after a hectic few months organising the walk and the Pink Day, he said: “We certainly won’t stop and we can’t thank people enough.”

Meanwhile, another Kirklees girl – five-year-old Beau from Roberttown – has also reached her £317,000 target for the same treatment.

The family’s MP – Batley and Spen’s Kim Leadbeater – has promised to lead a campaign in Parliament for an international vaccine trial to be led by the UK to ensure children like Eden and Beau don’t have to go abroad for treatment in the future.

Ms Leadbeater is backing the charity Solving Kids Cancer, which has supported both Eden and Beau, in their fundraising campaigns.

Ms Leadbeater said: “It will be a long road but I hope to make progress with an all-party approach at Westminster.”

Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney is also supporting Eden’s family.
