Why I Work In… is a regular feature, kindly sponsored by Huddersfield-based recruitment firm Stafflex, where we ask people about their jobs and the industry they work in. This time it’s SARAH HALLER, Head of Conveyancing at Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors.

Tell us a little bit about Chadwick Lawrence?
Chadwick Lawrence is an award winning law firm, with offices situated in eight different locations across West Yorkshire. We have recently been recognised by the Sunday Times as one of the top 500 places to work in the UK coupled with us receiving a gold award for customer service from Investor in Customers.

We offer expertise in areas such as commercial law, employment law, family law, and property law. The firm is committed to providing tailored solutions to its clients, whether they are individuals, businesses or organisations.

What is your role?
My role is Head of Conveyancing, and I am also the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and Senior Responsible Officer for the Conveyancing Quality Scheme.

How long have you worked in this sector?
I have been working in the legal sector since 1998. My first appointment was at Chadwick Lawrence in June 1998, when I started as a Temporary Secretary, covering maternity leave.

Over the years, I’ve progressed from Temp to Paralegal, to Trainee Solicitor, Solicitor, Salaried Partner and then Equity Partner. In the past my work included Wills and Probate and Commercial Property work alongside Conveyancing. For the last 15 years I have concentrated solely on Conveyancing.

For the past five years, my focus has been on team management. With the team’s growth and a sound management team in place for the department, I am transitioning back to a more client-facing role. This entails handling equity releases and collaborating closely with the probate team providing the necessary legal advice.

My main focus right now is our new Wills and Probate/LPA/Later Life Financial Planning offering which sits perfectly alongside my Equity Release work.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start a career in this sector?
Starting a career in the legal sector requires dedication, a strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous learning. It’s essential to be well-rounded in both legal knowledge and practical application and be proactive in building client relationships.

Networking and the ability to source your own clients I believe are crucial skills. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to success in this field, but being driven and hardworking will take you far.

If you could describe your job in 3 words what would they be?
Fast-paced, intense, rewarding.

What do you love most about your job?
The aspect of my job that I love most is the interaction with colleagues and clients. Building relationships and helping clients navigate complex legal matters is incredibly fulfilling.

What word would your colleagues use to describe you?
Colleagues would likely describe me as enthusiastic, cheerful, and nurturing. I’m passionate about what I do and genuinely care about the success and well-being of my team!

Where do you hope your career might take you?
I want to build a happy client base with great connections with brokers and financial advisers and to ensure the Later Life planning is a success.

I aspire to be valued by my partners and team, knowing that I’ve made a significant contribution to the practice. Ultimately, I aim to bring in quality clients, foster a positive work environment, and leave a lasting legacy when I eventually retire.
