A new weekly podcast by young people, for young people has been launched in Huddersfield.
Produced by a group of six young volunteers and supported by Huddersfield-based social enterprise Youth Social, ‘What The Friday Youth Podcast’ addresses the topics young people care about and need to know more about.
The podcast is available on all the main podcast platforms including Apple and Spotify and a new episode is out every Friday.
Episode 1 was a Mental Health special and tackled key questions such as when young people might need professional support, how to access it, and the range of services available to help them navigate their mental well-being.
In total 10 episodes have already been recorded and they cover a variety of subjects including health and wellbeing, employment, education, money management and housing.
As well as being hosted by the young people themselves, episodes also feature experts who provide facts, essential information and valuable insight.
All the content is presented in a relatable and engaging way, ensuring it resonates with young listeners.
The young volunteers have created an editorial team and are using the podcast to gain essential employability and life skills such as confidence building, improving communication and gaining creative technical expertise.
The project is also working with 14 young people searching for work who are creating podcast features about the barriers they are facing in getting into employment.
The podcast was the brainchild of Graham Sykes, senior director at Youth Social. He has produced a number of youth podcasts and is the host of the No1 music podcast ‘In Depth.’
He has been involved in youth engagement for over 20 years including work as a government enterprise and employment adviser.
He is also the author of the book Destination Adulthood – an essential guide for all teens and young adults.
