By Dan Lawton
Huddersfield Lawn Tennis & Squash Club men’s racquetball team travelled to Wilsden for their latest match without their captain Dan Lawton. Huddersfield are third bottom of the division and one place above their opponents.
Jon Lidster, playing at number 2 went on court to face Wilsden’s Matt Drake and lost the first game. However, inspired by his two children who were watching the game, Jon edged back into the match and took the next and two subsequent games to secure a 3-1 win.
Next up was Tony Stead playing John Webb. In what turned out to be a rollercoaster of a fixture, Tony lost the first game, won the second, lost the third and won the fourth which set up a tense final game.
Tony kept his nerve, played a steady game and kept the rallies going. Eventually he won the fixture and effectively the match for Huddersfield overall. This was Tony’s first win for the team and it was a great effort whilst under pressure. Well done, Tony!
Last up was Mike Coombes playing the considerably younger Tom Cleminson. Tom proved too strong defeating Mike 3-0.
The team did the absent captain proud and were grateful of the hospitality shown by their hosts. The pizzas were excellent!
