A former student from King James’s School in Almondbury has raised more than £3,000 in memory of her auntie who died from cancer aged just 33.

Ruby Lander, 17, who now lives in Colwyn Bay, walked the 110 miles from the North Wales seaside town back to the family’s former home in Huddersfield to raise money for Sarcoma UK.

The walk took around four days to complete and Ruby was supported every step of the way by family and friends.

Ruby’s auntie Carey Lander was part of Glaswegian indie pop group Camera Obscura. Carey died aged 33 in 2015 and she raised £125,000 for Sarcoma UK.

Ruby said: “I wanted to push myself a little bit and do it for a good cause. So, then I came up with the idea of a long distance walk.”

The walk was tough but Ruby was helped along the way by listening to her auntie’s music.

“There were multiple points when it was getting a bit rough so it was nice having the music in the background,” she said. “It also helped me remember what I was doing it for.”

Ruby wasn’t expecting to raise so much and added: “It’s been crazy to be honest. Seeing all the donations coming in gave me a massive boost of confidence. I’m proud to have raised so much money.”

Ruby was supported on the walk by school friends and members of her youth group from Huddersfield Elim Church.

Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments.

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the bone and soft tissue. It is difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat.
