A week has been organised in the Holme Valley to make people think about how they can do far more to help the environment.
Holme Valley Green Week which starts at the end of this month has been organised by Holmfirth-based community interest company fairandfunky and encourages people to take small steps to help change the world, especially the environment, recycling and Fairtrade.
The week is back for its third consecutive year with events running throughout the Holme Valley from September 30 to October 6.
Helen Robinson from fairandfunky said: “Here at fairandfunky we are dedicated to empowering, educating and inspiring people to take little steps to change the world and this is exactly what Holme Valley Green Week is all about.
“All of the Holme Valley Green Week events are free to attend and open to all. It’s our hope that individuals, organisations and businesses get involved, whether by attending events or creating their own eco-friendly initiatives. This week of events is more than just a series of activities, it’s a call to action for the entire community to think globally and act locally to take action for the climate.”
The week begins on Monday, September 30, at 6pm with Green Drinks, a networking event hosted at Café Root in New Mill where people passionate about the environment can share ideas, connect and listen to a guest speaker from Elland-based Suma Wholefoods, talking about sustainable business practices.
Holme Valley Climate Action Partnership will be hosting their annual Home Energy Event with information and solutions around making homes more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The Partnership will be at Holmfirth Tech on Wednesday, October 2 from 5pm.
The entire week will showcase The Great Big Green Children’s Art Exhibition. Artworks from junk you might normally throw in the bin has been created by primary school children across the Holme Valley and will be displayed in windows of businesses in Holmfirth and Honley to form an interactive exhibition trail to be enjoyed by all ages.
Fairandfunky’s annual Great Big Green Get Together will be a grand celebration to bring the week to a close.
The event on Friday, October 4 at Holmfirth Tech features a full day of activities, including a Fairtrade café, creative workshops, a book swap and a chance to connect with local ethical organisations, fostering a culture of reuse and thoughtful consumption.
fairandfunky wants to hear from any businesses, organisations and individuals joining in with their Green Week celebrations so if you are running an event that week, a community walk, book club, recycled art workshop, special offer on ‘green’ products in a shop or a film showing then let them know and they will add these activities to the Green Week Calendar.
