Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra is staging a concert in Huddersfield Town Hall … and then repeating it in Manchester Cathedral.
The Huddersfield concert on Saturday, June 15, will be with the St George’s Singers who come from Manchester and are conducted by their director, Neil Taylor.
He will conduct the concert in Huddersfield while Slaithwaite’s conductor, Ben Ellin, will take the baton at the return concert in Manchester Cathedral the following week.
The concert will feature Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, a celebration of Catholic mass in Old Church Slavonic. It is a vibrant and rhythmic piece that employs a large chorus and soloists in addition to the orchestra.
The concert will start with Poulenc’s Gloria, featuring solo soprano, orchestra and chorus and is one of Poulenc’s most celebrated works. The filling between these two is Scriabin’s massive orchestral piece, The Poem of Ecstasy.
One of the soloists is Charlotte Kelso, an Australian soprano and recent graduate of the Royal College of Music.
The concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on June 15 starts at 7.30pm. The concert at Manchester Cathedral on Saturday, June 22, also starts at 7.30pm.
