Brit Award winning singer-songwriter Tom Walker is performing two free gigs in St George’s Square in what will be a celebration of Huddersfield.
Tom, the multi-platinum selling star, whose hits include ‘Leave a Light On’, ‘Just You and I’ and ‘Head Underwater’, will perform two 30-minute sets at 11am and 1pm on Saturday (July 20). The entertainment starts at 10.30am and 12.30pm.
The Tom’s Towns initiative sees the singer visit various locations across the UK to connect with his fans, engage with local buskers and musicians, and call in on independent businesses.
He’s been to Tamworth, Barnsley, Wrexham and Colchester and when Tom asked fans for suggestions on where to visit next, Huddersfield was a popular choice.
The entire event will also be live streamed on TikTok, showcasing the best of what Huddersfield has to offer to a wider audience. One of the local musicians invited to perform on stage is teenage singer-songwriter Mason Whittle from Linthwaite.
It’s all very informal and fun – Tom on a small stage playing acoustic guitar. He gets local businesses involved too and there’s a ’Tombola’ where he gives away prizes to the audience. After the performances, he’ll hang out with fans for chats and selfies.
Kirklees Council is supporting the event and council leader Carole Pattison said: “It’s very exciting that our community can enjoy two free performances from a Brit award winning star in the heart of Huddersfield. I’m delighted that Tom has chosen to visit Kirklees and highlight all there is to love about our area.”
Scottish singer-songwriter Tom, who triumphed as the Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards and had a number one selling album, ‘What a Time to be Alive’, has a personal connection to Huddersfield, as it’s where his wife Annie was born.
“People up north are very lovely,” he said. “My wife Annie is from Huddersfield, and so I love Yorkshire.”
Tom’s new single ‘Holy Ghost’ has just been released. It’s a love song that was inspired by his wife Annie.
Tom will perform his 30-minute set twice on Saturday July 20, at 11am and 1pm, at St George’s Square.
