A late double from substitute Scarlett McMahon saw Huddersfield Town Women come back from 2-0 down to grab a point which could prove valuable come the end of the season.

The Terriers drew 2-2 with Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies at the Stafflex Arena on Sunday and it was McMahon who turned the game Town’s way.

McMahon only entered the field in the 80th minute and then scored twice in three minutes to preserve Town’s unbeaten start to the season.

Boss Glen Preston felt a point was the least his side deserved as they dominated against defensive-minded opposition.

“It was a difficult game but both sides might see it as two points dropped,” he said. “From our point of view we have had 80-90% of the game. They have had about four shots all game, three of which were from between 20 and 40 yards out and they have scored two goals from that.

“We’ve created enough chances and moments to score more than two goals and we could and should have nicked it at the end.”

Preston said four matches in two weeks could have taken its toll but he was pleased with how his players fought their way back.

“It’s a funny league and lots of results will be topsy turvy,” he said. “There are five or six teams who can take points off eachother. We won’t know until the end of the season but it could be a valuable point.”

Norton & Stockton played with a back six at times and Preston warned that other teams may come and play deep against his title hopefuls.

“We have to learn some street smarts on how to combat that,” he added.

Norton’s two goals came in the 72nd and 74th minutes, both scored by Bianca Owens. The second was a thunderbolt from almost 40 yards which crashed in off the underside of the bar.

The Terriers travel to Chorley for their next league fixture on Sunday September 8.

Town have been drawn away at York City Ladies in the preliminary round of the FAWNL Cup on Sunday September 15.
