Huddersfield-based theatre company Root & Branch Productions is bringing ‘Danny Echo’ to the Lawrence Batley Theatre in May.

The production, at the Huddersfield theatre on May 16-18, is Root & Branch’s third collaboration with American playwright Cody Daigle-Orians, following Arts Council England funding.

Young widow Rachael is torn apart by what happened on the final day of her husband Danny’s life.

She is thrown what seems like a lifeline when scientist Dr Meryl Kane offers her Danny back again – in the form of an AI replica.

She is running an experiment to examine the effect of the machines on the process of bereavement.

But it can only be programmed to repeat the words and actions from one day, and when Rachael chooses his last, she is unprepared for the traumatic events that unfold.

Stuck in her flat with a scarily realistic robot, Rachael can’t change anything that happened in the past. But can AI Danny help her to grieve and look to the future?

Root & Branch formed in Huddersfield in 2016 and focus on new writing and forgotten gems. With three of the four founders being women over 55, they are passionate about great roles for older women, on and off stage.

The exciting production uses live action, video and texting and premiered at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in 2022.
