Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra starts its 2024-2025 season with a concert called Kirklees Classics.

The event will be at Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday, November 9 at 7.30pm and showcases three of the Romantic era’s most beloved composers, Brahms, Dvořák & Tchaikovsky.

It starts with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, a playful and joyous work that sets a lively tone. In this overture, written as a thank you to the University of Breslau for awarding him an honorary doctorate, Brahms chose to humorously weave together a medley of student drinking songs, crafting them into a brilliant and sophisticated orchestral piece.

The result is a vibrant blend of light heartedness and grandeur, capturing Brahms’ ability to merge folk elements with classical rigour.

Following this energetic opener, Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings evokes a more intimate and contemplative mood. Known for its warm, lyrical beauty, the piece transports listeners to a serene, pastoral world. Its flowing melodies, graceful rhythms and delicate string textures evoke feelings of nostalgia and peace.

The concert culminates in the dramatic power of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, one of his most emotionally charged works. The symphony explores the idea of fate, introduced in the ominous opening fanfare, and unfolds with sweeping, intense movements that move between despair, longing and triumph.

The fourth symphony’s emotional depth and dynamic contrasts keep listeners on the edge of their seats, particularly in the exhilarating, triumphant finale.

The orchestra will be conducted by Katherine Stonham and led by Eileen Butterworth.

Tickets at £12-£18 for adults and £5 for children and students are available from the box office on 01484 225 755 or online at huddersfieldphilharmonic.co.uk
