A renowned American klezmer clarinettist will be running a ‘one-off’ masterclass in Marsden on Wednesday August 7 (7pm-9pm) and performing as part of a fundraiser the following evening.

Robin Seletsky, from Upstate New York, grew up with the sounds of klezmer from listening to her father, famed klezmer clarinettist and composer, Harold Seletsky.

As a teenager she attended the New England Conservatoire and the renowned Juilliard Music School in New York. After many years as a classically trained orchestral musician she now focuses on klezmer – leading workshops and masterclasses, teaching live and on-line and performing with her ensemble Big Galute.

I’m excited to be in the UK and to be leading a klezmer workshop,” said Robin. “I was originally coming over to do a presentation for the International Clarinet Convention in Dublin but I’ve been tempted over to Huddersfield by my pupil Jenny Goodman from Marsden who started lessons with me online during lockdown.

“I can’t wait to share klezmer with everyone – just bring your instrument and your love of playing!”

In her workshops Robin uses klezmer tunes (taught by ear but also with notation available) to explore the authentic sound, technique and style of klezmer. She will also build in improvisation opportunities. Her sessions are suitable for all musicians at all levels – not just clarinettists.

The workshop will be held at the North of England Centre for Music and the Arts, Standedge Visitor Centre, Waters Road, Marsden, HD7 6NQ.

Tickets are £15 full price (plus booking fee) or £6 reduced price (plus booking fee). To purchase a ticket go to www.ticketsource.co.uk and search for Robin Seletsky.

You can also hear Robin perform as part of a fundraiser for Marsden Resilience Fund with other local acoustic musicians on Thursday August 8 at 7.15pm at Katie’s Homemade Kitchen in Marsden. For more details contact Jenny Goodman on singing.jennyg@googlemail.com
