The Kirkwood has launched its annual Sunflower Memories Appeal for people across Kirklees to dedicate a beautiful sunflower in memory of loved ones.

The Sunflower Memories Appeal has been hugely supported in the past and will again be giving the people of Kirklees a unique opportunity to remember a loved one.

This year The Kirkwood are adding an extra element to their campaign by hosting a Sunflower Garden Party at the hospice in Dalton on July 6.

The Sunflower Garden Party gives people the chance to see the beautiful gardens in bloom as well as collect their commemorative sunflower plaques. At the event, The Kirkwood will have a BBQ, stalls and lots of entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

Giving people the chance to remember a loved one is important, this is especially true for Carol Barton who since 2018, has dedicated a sunflower in memory of her husband Colin whom The Kirkwood cared for up until his death in November 2018. Colin died at the age of 75 due to pancreatic cancer.

Since his death, Carol has dedicated a sunflower in his memory and has given each of his grandchildren one of the sunflowers to keep to remember him by. She also grows her own sunflowers every year as it was hers and Colin’s favourite flower.

Carol said: “I’ve always loved the Sunflower Memories Appeal and I donate to it every year in memory of Colin.

“I’ve always grown sunflowers in the garden too. I grow six, one for each grandchild and a separate one for Colin. Colin’s flower keeps an eye on the grandchildren and it’s something I like to do every year. The appeal is such a lovely idea.”

The Kirkwood continues to care for anyone with a life limiting illness in Kirklees, and donations given through appeals like their Sunflower Memories Appeal, means the hospice can continue to support those most in need of that vital care they require.

The Kirkwood’s events manager Rachael Savage said: “Giving people this opportunity to remember someone they love is something we cherish deeply. The dedications we receive are truly heart-warming, remembering that special someone in their lives.”
