Huddersfield could have a new police station in 2026.

West Yorkshire Police have submitted a planning application to demolish a former car showroom and build a new two-storey police station in Northgate, just off Huddersfield Ring Road.

Huddersfield Hub reported in July that the force had consulted with local residents and businesses around the boarded up former Nissan/Fiat dealership site, across the Ring Road from the Tesco store.

Now a formal planning application has been submitted to Kirklees Council though, as yet, there’s little detail.

During the previous consultation, computer-generated images of a two-storey L-shaped building were published. It was said the building would accommodate between 50 and 100 police officers and staff and there would be parking for 112 vehicles.

Huddersfield Hub understands there will be a helpdesk open to the public but there won’t be any cells.

Completion of the new police station will mark a major shift in policing operations across Kirklees.

The Kirklees police HQ, currently at Huddersfield Police Station in Castlegate, is moving to a brand new district police HQ being built on the former Kirklees College site in Halifax Road, Dewsbury.

Once the new Huddersfield Police Station is completed – the latest estimate is 2026 – the old one will close and the building is expected to be sold off. The existing Dewsbury Police Station in Aldams Road, next to Dewsbury Bus Station, will also close.

Currently there are cells at both Huddersfield and Dewsbury police stations but once the shake-up is completed there will only be cells at the new district HQ.

That means suspects arrested in Huddersfield and Holmfirth – and anywhere in Kirklees – will be taken to Dewsbury.

West Yorkshire Police first started looking for a site for a new district HQ as far back as 2006. When they missed out on the former Huddersfield Sports Centre site to the University of Huddersfield – where the new National Health Innovation Campus is being built – they widened their search outside Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Hub asked West Yorkshire Police for more information about the new police station and how much it would cost but a force spokesman would only say: “Work to plan, design and cost the new station continues.

“Subject to planning permission being granted, it is projected the station will be completed for use during 2026.”

Public consultation on the planning application runs until September 28 2024 with a decision not expected until November 7 2024 at the earliest.
