A cycling enthusiast set up a fundraising mountain bike challenge in memory of his partner who shared the same passion – and it’s now in its third year.

The Kirkwood Memorial Bike Trail takes place in memory of Katrina Cross, who died in July 2020. She died at home and had been cared for by family and friends along with staff from the Huddersfield-based hospice.

The event, organised by Katrina’s partner Richard Poole, will be held on Sunday September 15 at Shepley Cricket Club.

The ride has been kindly supported by Stafflex, where Katrina used to work, along with Kirklees College, Shepley Cricket Club and Mindlab Media.

There will be three rides – a 26-mile route for the ‘purists’; 15 miles for the ‘champs’; and three laps of the club for juniors.

The two previous rides raised around £2,000 for The Kirkwood and Richard said: “Katrina had only been riding for a year but we had some amazing adventures on two wheels which is why I set the ride up.

“The ride takes in lots of places myself and Katrina spent a lot of time and this is our way of giving back for the help and support that we were given by the wonderful staff at The Kirkwood.

“Katrina was selfless, kind and thoughtful and always brought a smile to everyone she met. It’s great that we can remember such an amazing person and support a charity that has helped so many people.”

Riders start at 10am and the trail takes in roads and public bridleways and follows some of the Trans Pennine Trail.

Places on the ride can be booked at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-kirkwood-memorial-bike-trail-2024-imo-katrina-cross-tickets-990563300497 and those taking part can set up their own JustGiving page.
