Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin met with apprentices and families as she toured a new housing development in Linthwaite.
Yorkshire Housing and The Casey Group welcomed Mayor Brabin to the £25.4 million Oakdale Park development which is supported with funding from Homes England.
The 125-home development will provide a mix of two, three and four-bedroomed homes for affordable rent, rent-to-buy and shared ownership.
The homes are being built using timber frames, a process that creates highly energy efficient homes whilst removing huge amounts of CO2 from construction process.
This design supports the Mayor’s ambitions to build more low carbon, affordable rented and low cost home ownership homes across West Yorkshire.
Work started on site in March last year and is expected to be complete by October next year. The site was allocated within the Kirklees Local Plan and sits in area where there are very few affordable homes.
The Oakdale Park development will help provide local people with access to good quality affordable family homes.
While touring the development the Mayor met local apprentices as well as a young family who were homeless before moving onto the estate earlier this year.
Speaking about her visit, Mayor Brabin said: “Here in West Yorkshire, we’re on the side of the builders not the blockers, and our historic partnership with Homes England will help us build up to 40,000 homes across the region.
“I was thrilled to visit this Yorkshire Housing site to see the amazing difference a good quality, sustainable and truly affordable home can make.
“Everyone should have a safe and secure place to call home – and through the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership, we’re building a greener, happier West Yorkshire that works for all.”
Yorkshire Housing are members of the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership, a group of 14 housing associations that are working with the Mayor to build more affordable homes across the region.
Nick Atkin, chief executive at Yorkshire Housing and vice-chair of the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership, said: “Linthwaite has a significant shortage of affordable housing options.
“The Oakdale Park development is a great example of building the right homes in the right place and this is providing 125 families with high quality, sustainable and affordable homes.
“As part of the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership, we’re committed to working closely with the Mayor to scale up the delivery of affordable housing across the region. The Partnership has already secured 3,857 new homes and has plans to build thousands more over the next few years.”
The development in Linthwaite is expected to be completed by autumn 2024.
