Huddersfield’s theatre has revealed its full spring 2025 season … and it’s out to push the boundaries again.
In the coming months the Lawrence Batley Theatre will feature the return of a world-renowned circus dance company, brave and exciting new theatre from local West Yorkshire artists and an Olivier-award nominated drama from South Asian theatre makers.
Lawrence Batley Theatre chief executive Becky Dash said: “As we head into the new year we’re proud to present a season that reflects the people of our community and puts them centre stage. This spring we are celebrating South Asian stories and supporting local West Yorkshire talent. Alongside this we’re bringing world-class theatre from across the UK here to Huddersfield.
“We’re here to make an impact in Huddersfield and as a registered charity we need your support to continue bringing you the magic of theatre. Visit the venue this spring and you’ll feel welcomed, be entertained and leave inspired.”
The theatre is committed to reflecting West Yorkshire’s diversity with a particular focus on welcoming South Asian communities to the venue.
Working closely with the theatre’s community ambassadors – local South Asian artists who advise the theatre on delivering work that reflect the community – the theatre has programmed a series of events which celebrate South Asian stories.
One is the Olivier-award nominated drama from South Asian theatre makers called 10 Nights, written by Shahid Iqbal Khan and performed by Phizzical.
It’s the story of one man’s journey of self- discovery and facing the consequences of his actions, performed in English with some Urdu and Arabic references.
Alongside this the theatre presents Rassam, an exhibition of photography which explores South Asian traditions curated by Hardeep Sahota and captured by local photographer John-Slemensek-Thorne.
There is also the return of their regular Bhangra Night, a fun and friendly club-like event with Bhangra DJs, Dhol players and dancing.
The theatre continues to bring world class touring theatre and dance productions to Huddersfield and the spring season sees the return of the world-renowned circus dance company Motionhouse who have been visiting the venue for a number of years.
Their new show, Hidden, is at the cutting edge of live performance and digital integration using gravity-defying choreography, a pulsing soundscape and a shape-shifting set drawn together by digital projections into a living film.
The theatre is continuing to fly the flag for local talent and present shows created by West Yorkshire artists, proving that world-class theatre is being created in the region and putting northern voices and stories in the spotlight.
This season in the theatre’s Cellar Theatre – a space to discover brave and exciting new work – there are two shows from local artists which showcase what is being made here in Yorkshire.
The theatre’s Associate Artist, playwright Philip Stokes, returns with explosive new drama Shellshocked fresh from a sell-out Edinburgh Fringe and theatre maker Natalie Bellingham brings her special combination of movement, clowning and storytelling in Look After Your Knees.
Tickets for the spring season are now on sale. More information and tickets can be found at thelbt.org
