Huddersfield Town Women are into another cup semi-final this season after beating Doncaster Rovers Belles 1-0 on Sunday. The terrific Laura Elford once again stole the show as she bagged the all-important winner.
Boss Glen Preston’s side are chasing glory in two cup competitions – and he wants to win them both!
The Terriers are already in one cup final this season playing Southampton in the FA Women’s National League, League Cup at Solihull Moors Stadium on April 24. And Preston’s side are now just one game away from a County Cup showpiece event.
On the win over Doncaster Preston said: “I thought Doncaster were excellent, hard to break down and tough to get through. We tried a different system with a few different players that have been knocking on the door.
“I thought we came out slowly but then as the game went on I saw noticeable improvements. I thought the second half we controlled the game and had lots of possession in their half. The only disappointment is that it was only 1-0 when I think we should have scored a second and third goal.”
Preston, who is in his second stint as Huddersfield boss, insists he wants to lead his side out in not just one but two cup finals this year.
He added: “At Huddersfield you want to win every game and I need to use the who squad to do that.
“We want to win both cup competitions and finish in the league as high as possible and that’s what our season is about.”
Despite having many half chances throughout the game the first real big opportunity came in the 72nd minute. Elford went close to scoring the opener after blazing the ball over the bar from a goalmouth scramble.
Only moments later the Terriers had another chance through skipper Katie Stanley but it was flagged off-side. The winner, however, came three minutes after that when Elford’s well-taken strike beat the Doncaster keeper.
Town’s next game comes on Sunday at home to West Brom in the league. Town currently sit 5th in the table on 32 points.
